Meet the MDM - Patrick Hirscher

How did you get started in networking?

In my youth, I became interested in computers (Atari, Commodore C64, first PC). I took my first step towards the Internet and connectivity when I got a 56K modem. During my studies, I soon realised that I was more interested in networking technology.

How long have you been at Zyxel and where were you before?

I have been with Zyxel since June 2015. I started as Pre-Sales Engineer and Trainer, covering Germany and Austria. In November last year (2018), I became Wireless market Development Manager – the role I have now. Previously, I worked as a network consultant at one of Germany's largest IT system houses, and as a project manager at a service provider for SD WAN and SD LAN.

What makes your job interesting?

The constant change and progress in the IT industry, makes it really interesting and working with a manufacturer means that you live on the cutting edge. We are constantly watching the market and thinking about how to do something that will help us and our partners to achieve success.

What do you like most about working for Zyxel?

There are lots of thing but for me, it’s a big bonus that I am not location-based. I really like to work at the Würselen location, where I can exchange ideas with my colleague, But I also like being able to exchange views with other colleagues around the world, which I get to do on a regular basis through regular meetings and conferencing. Zyxel feels like a big family and it is always nice to see other colleagues from other countries. Despite the different locations, we all have the same goal and that is to reap the success we sow.

What’s your favourite Zyxel product and why?

I like the whole portfolio of switching, security and wireless solutions. But my favourite is wireless, of course – and especially the new AX models.

What’s the strangest or most unusual question you’ve ever had in your job?

My son always tells me there are no stupid questions but only stupid answers. The funniest question I always get to hear – from people outside the industry is ‘Hey, you're work in computers, can you help me fix mine?

What are you most excited about looking ahead?

Fortunately, we do not know what will happen in the future. Therefore, it makes sense to live in the here and now. But any challenge, be it professional or private, will always be interesting and, with the help of my friends and colleagues, I’d always hope and expect to be able to address those challenges and turn them into opportunities.

What do you like to get up to outside work?

In the past, sport was my passion. These days, I love to spend time with my son and family, and also to work on my home or in the garden. Whether it’s going to the cinema, watching shows, listening to music or enjoying a meal, it’s always good to meet with friends, enjoy time together.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

My dad used to tell me: ‘You can only learn if you make the effort to learn’. And my mum’s advice was always: ‘Every great journey begins with a small step’.
