ZyXEL helps Carriers Wales deliver Uncontended Fibre to the Business

August 23, 2010

ZyXEL Communications UK one the world’s leading broadband access solutions providers and Carrier Wales are delivering fibre ‘uncontended’ connectivity with services from 10Mb to 1Gb to businesses across Wales.

Carrier Wales’ solution is based upon ZyXEL’s Metro Ethernet Switches (MEF) being used in the core and at the edge of the network. The ZyXEL XGS4728F L3 Managed 10G Stackable Switches are used in the core of the network and provide the aggregation to the edge switches via the FibreSpeed network. This switch also has the ability to connect 10G fibre to allow for cost effective increase of bandwidth from 1G to 10G as and when needed.

ZyXEL’s, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) accredited, aggregation and access layer switches can reduce initial equipment costs by up to 60%. This type of saving means that Carrier Wales can build out Gigabit connectivity to the customer premise at virtually the cost of Ethernet speed – this in turn gives Carrier Wales the ability to future-proof bandwidth allowing extra capacity to be ‘switched on’ when required.

By adding WiMAX to the end of the ‘hardwired’ network, high-speed Internet can reach out to remote communities. Carrier Wales has already launched its WiMAX service in Deeside, Sandycroft, Broughton, Ewloe and the Flintshire coast. Carrier Wales intends to extend its WiMAX coverage to include Mold, St Asaph, The Wrexham Industrial Estate and Liverpool town centre.

“Because of ZyXEL’s knowledge and understanding of NGN, we were able to plan, test and deploy on budget and ahead of schedule. Their Metro Switches are both reliable and come at a price point which is cost effective. ZyXEL is a true next generation network partner.” Said, David Brook, Technical Director of Internet Services, Carrier Wales.

Using ZyXEL Metro switches, Carrier Wales is able to interconnect with FibreSpeed, NTL/TeleWest, BT Openreach and other Next Generation Network (NGN) providers.

The edge switches in the remote PoP’s are based on ZyXEL’s MES-3728 24 port 10/100 L2 Metro Switch and the ES3124F24 port SFP Slot L2 Managed Switch, which provides the fibre or Ethernet service to the customers premises. Customer site equipment is from the ZyXEL Switching and Security range and will depend upon the customers’ requirements. Customer information is secured and separated via VLAN’s and carried across the FibreSpeed network using the ZyXEL QinQ mechanism, this allows Carrier Wales to be in control of the complete solution via the ZyXEL switches, and not rely on any third party configuration.
